Noise is one of the more consistently documented environmental stressors on health. The World Health Organization's guidance on community noise ties chronic noise exposure to disrupted sleep, elevated stress, and reduced concentration, effects that show up well below the volume most people would call loud. Much of that research concerns traffic and industry, but the body responds to noise generated inside a home the same way it responds to noise from outside it. A home generates more of its own noise than people tend to notice, footsteps, conversation, the low hum of appliances, and none of it needs to be loud to register as a steady background stressor over the course of a day.
WHAT NOISE DOES
How much noise a room generates on its own comes down largely to what's in it. Acousticians measure this as reverberation time, how long a sound takes to fade to silence after it's made, and a room full of hard, dense surfaces extends that time considerably. Stone and glass reflect sound rather than absorbing it, so footsteps carry and voices echo more than they would in a softer room. Soft, fibrous materials work the other way: wool and leather absorb sound energy rather than bouncing it back, which is why even a single rug on a hard floor makes a noticeable difference.
WHAT A ROOM DOES TO SOUND
None of this requires rebuilding a room. A wool rug or an upholstered chair, placed in a hard-surfaced room, does real, measurable work toward quieting it, not just softening how it looks. Two rooms with the same footprint and the same number of people in them can produce very different amounts of everyday noise, depending only on whether what's inside them reflects sound or absorbs it. A leather sofa, a wool-upholstered chair, even a single substantial rug, placed where sound would otherwise bounce off stone or glass, does work that's easy to underestimate because it happens passively, in the background, every day the room is used rather than in any single noticeable moment.
