TEMPERATURE

 

 

You notice thermal discomfort before you understand it. A room that's too warm makes you restless without quite naming why; a chair too cold to sit in for more than a moment reads as unwelcoming before you've thought about it at all. That instinct isn't imprecise. It's measurable, and it affects more than mood. Indoor heat has a documented effect on how well people think: in a 2018 Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health study, young adults living in buildings without air conditioning during a heat wave scored measurably worse on tests of memory and reaction time than those in cooler buildings. Sleep researchers have found something similar at night: a bedroom that runs too warm interferes with the body's natural overnight temperature drop, the mechanism that helps trigger deep sleep.

WHAT THE BODY NOTICES

 

 

Engineers have a name for what's actually being measured here: thermal comfort, defined by ASHRAE Standard 55 as depending on more than air temperature alone. The surfaces around a body radiate heat too, and furniture is very much part of that exchange, which is why a room can read as chilly even when the thermostat says it's warm enough, if the surfaces in it are cold. Stone and metal conduct heat away from skin fast, which is why a marble tabletop or a steel chair frame feels cold even in a warm room: they aren't actually colder than the air, they're just pulling heat out of your hand faster than your hand can replace it. Wool does the opposite. Its naturally crimped fiber traps still air and slows heat loss, the same property that makes it warm as a coat and warm as a seat cushion.

WHAT A SURFACE DOES

Antique wood carries the same principle over years instead of moments. Solid wood expands and contracts with heat and humidity, and pieces kept near a radiator or a sunny window are the ones most likely to crack or loosen at the joints over time, not from fragility, but because the wood never stopped responding to the room around it. Conservators at Winterthur advise keeping it away from direct heat and sudden temperature swings for this reason. Worth knowing too: a stone or metal piece that feels cool to the touch isn't a flaw, it's simply doing what that material does, the same way it would in any room. A room's temperature, then, shapes how well you sleep in it and how long the things you keep in it will last.
